The game starts you off speaking to your instructor Asio. Once we are back at Vellie, return to the professors' station to the east and talk to him. With airplanes, rockets, and water-powered jetpacks, that dream has now more or less come true. Otus is mute and that means he can not speak. We will eventually end up back in Vellie, which is being destroyed rather quickly. For the longest time, humans dreamed of the days when they could fly. Owlboy makes itself painfully clear at the onset of the game that Otus, the mute player protagonist, is plagued by a community that largely views him as a failure.With no mention of his parents, Otus is raised by his mentor Asio, although beaten down might be a more fitting description. The real challenge of the game is oftentimes just keeping your bearings as you fly around since there's no in-game map. Vellie Players will start off the game as Otus a young and Mute owl. In fact the game really could have leveraged this idea a little further-as it is the puzzles are generally pretty straight-forward. Aside from adding an interesting visual element this isn't too dissimilar than if Otus carried the weapons himself, but there are times where you need to separate from your partner to solve a puzzle. Otus can carry one of three partners at any given time, and they are able to shoot or otherwise interact with the world. However, Otus doesn't directly receive upgrades or new items-his partners do. From my experience, I missed a lot in the other areas and had to problems backtracking to get the coins later.
You do eventually get access to revisit the Vellie Cave to get the final coins. Perhaps it’s because they’re the cutest birds of prey perhaps it’s because they’re one of the most mysterious. I'm going to answer my own question- in case anyone else had the same.
There's a small overworld to explore as well as temples with puzzles, hazards, and enemies to defeat. Man this game is SOO good Seriously, one of the more enchanting beginnings to any game weve honestly every played. As an owl Otus can fly through the air, making Owlboy a uniquely vertical game at times-the closest comparison I could make would be Kid Icarus.
At its heart Owlboy has all the basic elements of a familiar 2D adventure/platformer, but the flying mechanics and partner system are what set the game apart.
